That's right, Iím a kickballer. In case you donít know what kickball is, itís that game you probably played as a child in elementary school. Itís similar to softball, but instead of swinging at a softball with a bat you kick at a big, red rubber ball. The teams are made up of eclectic groups of people who want to have fun, meet new people and kick red rubber balls. What more can you ask for?
Online registration for the upcoming season has begun and ends Aug. 21. Joining cost $30 per player, which pays for your T-shirt, the city referee fee and other league fees. Late registration is Aug. 22-Oct. 9 and cost $40.The hour-long games are at 7 and 8 p.m. every Thursday at Modesto Gomez Field.
I will warn you, though: itís not a sport for the faint of heart. During the first season a guy broke one of his wrists while defending home plate when he collided with the base runner. Last season, during the championship game, a base runner slid into my foot so hard I lost one of my toe nails. Itís growing back. But donít let these stories discourage you! Kickball injuries are few and far between. But if youíre not sure about joining, you can go to one of the meet-and-greets on Aug. 14, 21 or 28. You can watch a game, meet some cool people and have a fun story for Fridayís water-cooler talk.
