That's right, I’m a kickballer. In case you don’t know what kickball is, it’s that game you probably played as a child in elementary school. It’s similar to softball, but instead of swinging at a softball with a bat you kick at a big, red rubber ball.
The teams are made up of eclectic groups of people who want to have fun, meet new people and kick red rubber balls. What more can you ask for?Online registration for the upcoming season has begun and ends Aug. 21. Joining cost $30 per player, which pays for your T-shirt, the city referee fee and other league fees. Late registration is Aug. 22-Oct. 9 and cost $40.
The hour-long games are at 7 and 8 p.m. every Thursday at Modesto Gomez Field.I will warn you, though: it’s not a sport for the faint of heart. During the first season a guy broke one of his wrists while defending home plate when he collided with the base runner. Last season, during the championship game, a base runner slid into my foot so hard I lost one of my toe nails. It’s growing back.
But don’t let these stories discourage you! Kickball injuries are few and far between. But if you’re not sure about joining, you can go to one of the meet-and-greets on Aug. 14, 21 or 28. You can watch a game, meet some cool people and have a fun story for Friday’s water-cooler talk.
