Dropouts Asked to Return

From Laura Cruz-Acosta, About.com GuideSeptember 16, 2008

El Paso Independent School District, the largest of the city’s nine school districts has a gloomy dropout rate of about 11 percent.El Paso Mayor John Cook

And about 34 percent of El Pasoans have less than a high school diploma according to the American Community Profile Survey for El Paso. Something drastic must be done to reduce that number.

EPISD Superintendent Lorenzo Garcia recently joined Mayor John Cook and several local celebrities as they knocked on the doors of high school dropouts to learn why they left and encourage them to return to school.

This grassroots effort is a great start and so far it appears to have a positive effect. Hopefully the results will last and school officials will learn what it takes to help these students never consider education an impossibility.
